Android, Fragmentation, and Condoms

terminatorFragmentation in Android universe is worsening (unsubstantiated scientifically, of course). Recently, a new study linked the F-word to the “slow erosion of interest levels” among developers towards Android platform.

Google’s Chairman Eric Schmidt went to 2012 Consumer Electronics Show to convince the world that Android is all about differentiation, NOT fragmentation. He said, “Differentiation means that you have a choice and the people who are making the phones, they’re going to compete on their view of innovation, and they’re going to try and convince you that theirs is better than somebody else.” Naturally, he opined that, “Differentiation is positive, fragmentation is negative.”

Fragmentation or differentiation (or whatever) in the Android ecosystem leads to various different OS versions, screen sizes resolutions, processors, UIs, and yes, a plethora of handsets’ brand names. Thanks to The Intercom Blog, we now know that Android phones bear condoms’ names. See below:

This is probably attempt by marketers at HTC, Samsung, and LG to neutralize the geeky sounding “Android” with evocative, provocative names. After all, the grand plan for world domination requires the humanization of the Droids.
